Comic Book Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, Vol. 2
Today we’re slicing into something totally radical. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, Vol. 2!
If you grew up glued to the classic '80s TMNT cartoon like I did, this comic is pure nostalgia-fueled pizza heaven. IDW brings back the goofy fun, high-energy action, and pizza-loving attitude of the original animated Turtles, and they nailed it. This volume collects issues #1–5 of the new series, and it’s a total blast from start to finish.
Story Breakdown:
Our favourite Heroes in a Half Shell kick things off with a new twist on an old foe. After a freak accident in the sewers, the Rat King, the creepy rodent master himself, finds his power shifting. Instead of controlling rats, he can now influence reptiles! Talk about bad news for Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Facing mind-controlled reptiles makes for a wild and unpredictable fight, and it’s such a clever way to shake up a familiar villain.
But that’s just the start!
Professor McGuffin (yes, that's his real name. Love the cartoon energy) sends the Turtles on an underwater mission where they discover Turtlantis — an underwater civilisation that worships turtles. It’s hilarious, weird, and precisely the kind of "Saturday Morning" silliness you’d hope for.
And if that wasn’t enough, Donatello picks up a strange interdimensional signal from the Deep South, leading to a team-up with the Punk Frogs, another deep cut from TMNT lore that old-school fans will appreciate. Meanwhile, the Shredder is up to his usual dirty tricks, having stolen an indestructible meteorite from TCRI. It’s classic Shredder chaos, and the Turtles have their hands (and shells) full.
Why You Should Read It:
1) It perfectly captures the spirit of the '80s animated show.
2) Fun, light-hearted storytelling with lots of action and jokes.
3) Packed with characters and references, longtime fans will adore.
4) Bright, colourful art that feels like you’re watching a lost Saturday morning episode.
Final Thoughts:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, Vol. 2 is pure joy. It's goofy, action-packed, and unashamedly nostalgic. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just discovering the charm of the Turtles, this comic is a slice of pizza you don’t want to miss. Grab your nunchucks, hop on a skateboard, and dive in!
